She sprayed cool water on Jett’s hooves, working her way up his legs, and watching as the clear liquid splashed across his back. He bobbed his head, his saucer eyes thanking her. Every few seconds, the spray bounced back at her, misting her face and legs. If this outdoor wash stall wasn’t heaven, she didn’t know what was.

A horse and rider appeared in the distance, the gray thoroughbred’s impossibly lengthy legs and swooping topline giving them away. Alyssa rode Bentley out of the woods, her reins loose and lips pressed into a flat line. She leaned back in the saddle, her shoulders slumped as if she didn’t have a care in the world.

“You must have taken a long trail ride.”

“Yeah. My dad stopped by again and I had to get away.” She made a face. “I didn’t know where the heck I was. Thankfully, Bentley led me back.” She patted his neck. “Did you ride?”

“Jill and I jumped some courses. It was fun.”

Alyssa motioned toward the expanse of forest behind them. “It’s so relaxing out there. I can see why Caroline never came back.”

Brynlei raised her eyebrows, wondering if things between Alyssa and her dad were even worse than she realized.

Alyssa jutted out her chin. “I’m joking. Of course, I’m not going to spend the rest of my life living in the woods out in the middle of nowhere.”

“Yeah. I know.” Brynlei bit her lip, refocusing on the droplets of water dripping down Jett’s legs.

A mischievous gleam sparkled in Alyssa’s eyes. “What are you doing after this?”

“I’m not sure. I’ll probably go check in with my girls and make sure no one misses dinner. What are you doing?”

“Same.” Alyssa scratched an itch on her arm, her lips curling up. “Cabin 5 better be on the lookout tonight.”

“What do you mean?”

Alyssa shrugged. “Something bad is going to happen to your girls. That’s all I’m saying.” She giggled as she hopped down from Bentley’s back.

An uneasiness traveled through Brynlei’s core as she wondered what Alyssa was up to. She stepped forward, finding comfort in the solid ground beneath her feet.

“You shouldn’t mess with my girls anymore. They’ve been through enough.”

Alyssa fluttered her eyelashes. “Relax, will you? It’s all in good fun. Just a friendly competition between cabins, like Jessica wanted.”

Brynlei placed her palm on Jett’s side. “Debbie said that Jessica is planning a ghosts in the graveyard game later.”

Alyssa tossed back her head. “Oh, great. That’s exactly what we need. More forced activities. I wish she and my dad would just run off to Aruba together and stop ruining my life.”

Brynlei didn’t see how a game of ghosts in the graveyard would harm her cabinmate, but she bit her tongue. Mr. Smithson’s new relationship was obviously causing Alyssa pain.

“See ya.” Alyssa led Bentley toward the darkened aisle of the barn. Brynlei set the hose back in its place and spritzed botanical fly spray across Jett’s coat, glancing over her shoulder and wondering what Alyssa was planning.
